WPML and multilingual filters
Overview
WPEnhanced Ajax Filter Blocks can work with WPML (and similar multilingual setups) when each language has filter pages with translated content, terms, and block strings.
The plugin registers translatable strings for block labels, placeholders, swatch configuration, and other user-facing text configured in Filter Posts Item blocks.
Recommended setup
-
Translate content — Posts, products, and taxonomy terms via WPML as usual. Filters query content in the current language when WPML scopes queries correctly.
-
Duplicate or translate filter pages — Build filter pages per language in the block editor, or use WPML's page translation workflow so each locale has its own block layout.
-
Translate block strings — Use WPML String Translation (or WPML's block translation tools) to translate:
- Filter item labels and placeholders
- Range prefix/suffix text
- Show More / Show Less button text
- Swatch option labels in JSON configuration
- Conditional filter titles
-
URL sync — Filter query parameters in URLs should remain consistent across languages; slugs for terms differ per language when terms are translated.
What the plugin translates
When WPML integration is active, the plugin registers strings keyed per block instance on a page, including:
- Custom labels and titles
- Search and select placeholders
- Range slider text
- Swatch configuration JSON
- Collapsible category toggle text
Strings appear in WPML String Translation under contexts related to WPEnhanced Ajax Filter Blocks / filter posts item blocks.
Taxonomy and product filters
- Translated terms filter products assigned to the translated term in that language.
- Ensure product and category translations are linked in WPML so counts and results match shopper expectations.
- WooCommerce multilingual setups (WCML) should be configured before testing shop filters.
Common issues
| Issue | Approach |
|---|---|
| Labels still in default language | Translate strings in WPML String Translation; clear cache |
| Empty filters in secondary language | Confirm translated posts/products exist and terms are assigned |
| Wrong products in translated shop | Verify WCML product/category relationships |
Third-party compatibility
WPML is the most common setup; other multilingual plugins may work if they filter WordPress queries by language. Test thoroughly on staging—query integration varies by plugin.
